Washington State

The workshop in Port Townsend, Washington, was November 17 - 22, 2008

Location: The Port Townsend School Of Woodworking at Fort Worden...
The building is the old power plant, built circa 1904...

Behind the 1/4" steel doors is the workshop...

Inside we get started building boards...
Seven guys signed up...Ages 25 through nearly 60...

The guys start by laminating thin wood strips of wood that will be the deck / bottoms...

I brought some Cedar, Basswood, Redwood and Aalskan Yellow Cedar for the skins...
Here the decks are laminated with fiberglass and epoxy...

Some guys built round nose boards that required a form to build upon...

Part of the process requires lots of clamps...

Rich, the school district superintendent from Sisters, Oregon

with the help of his wife Colleen, fine tune some clamp placement...

The clamped components were brought outside to dry in the sun...

Mike Brown in front of his dad Steve, hand cut the interior frame parts with knives...

Rich uses a jigsaw to trim the deck skin before putting it on the frame...

Mike and Steve with their fish frames...A 5'10" and a 7'11"...
Mike surfs, dad doesn't, but they dig doing things together...

Allen the shadow, has his frame ready for the next phase...

David was ahead of the pack and had his deck attached to his frame first...

Here's David spraying aerosol contact cement on what will be the first of many layers that make up the rails...

In the foreground is the roll cork they used as one of the layers...

Matt, a Port Townsend Contractor, is trimming some excess deck from the skin that is attached to the frame...

David, a Tofino boat captain, sets the final bending plywood layer on his 5'10" fish...

Time to shape...

Allen, another Port Townsend guy, a gardener, sprays some contact cement while David keeps shaping...

Looking good...!!!...

Rich, makes a list of what he needs to build out the rails...

In the power tool room of the woodshop is this old escape hatch...

There used to be a generator in there and if things went haywire, they had an option other than the door...

Allen gets to the shaping phase...

Matt peels off the protective paper from the deck to reveal the beauty below...

Everybody is busy...

Hand and power sanding...

Matt evens out the deck in the sunshine...

Matt getting closer to to realizing a dream...

Meanwhile, David uses the restroom as a dust free place to seal-coat his board...

Matt with a few final passes...

Mat is 99% done and will finish up back home, a few blocks away...

Allen stands proud with his achievement...

David with his masterpiece...

Steve and Mike and Allen had to split before we took this group picture...

That's John on the far right, a Great Lakes Ship Captain...He along with Matt built the 7'4"...

L to R.. John, Matt, David, Me, and Rich...That's Matt's board...

These guys got the full agony to ecstasy experience...I'm reall proud of their work ethic and commitment to doing things right...

There is talk of repeating this workshop again next November...Stay tuned for details...

Finally, A huge thank you to Tim Lawson, Jim and John the founders of The Port Townsend School of Woodworking for hosting this workshop..

And a big thanks also to Greg Loehr and Resin Research for his support of projects like this...
